Idaho RID presents The Challenges of Interpreting for Children: The EIPA and Beyond By Julie Melton Oct 2–3, 2009 8:30am-4:30pm 1.4 CEUs North Idaho College; 1000 West Garden Avenue, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814 Hedlund Building, Rm 229 http://www.nic.edu/about/maps/campus_map.asp Julie is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Idaho State University’s Sign Language Studies/Educational Interpreting program and began her interpreting/teaching career in 1982. While interpreting was her focus professionally, Julie always loved teaching, and continued to teach workshops throughout her career. She became part of ISU’s faculty in 2001. She encourages students, has an "interesting" sense of humor, and focuses on the positive. This workshop focuses on improving interpretations for students in K-12 settings. Both sign-tovoice and voice-to-sign will be addressed. A variety of signing models will be used, including ASL and conceptually-accurate signed English models. Interpreters will identify some of the demands and controls (challenges and strategies) of interpreting and transliterating when working with students K-12. Participants will acquire: • Enhanced process management skills and use of clarification techniques with children. • Expanded conceptual accuracy and the inclusion of ASL features in their work with English to ASL interpreting when working in educational settings with children • Sign-to-voice skills using a variety of signed language samples of children • An improved ability to identify and use appropriate registers More confidence and accuracy matching signer/speaker affect This workshop is targets educational interpreters and is open to all interpreters, as well as ASL and interpreting students. This workshop is at the beginner-to-intermediate level. Workshop presented in English. ASL/English requests should be made by September 18 th. He has been nationally certified for over 11 years and holds CI, CT, and NIC-Master. He has a Master's degree in Business Administration. He currently works full time in the VRS industry and does community interpreting and workshop presentations around the country. This workshop explores common factors that contribute to the occurrence of ethical dilemmas, reviews relevant literature in the field, and it provides participants opportunities to develop an effective framework for navigating these dilemmas. The workshop is presented in ASL, and targets community and educational interpreters. It is open to all interpreters, as well as ASL and interpreting students. This workshop is at the beginner-to-intermediate level. Participants will exhibit: 1) increased familiarity with current field research and inquiry regarding addressing ethically challenging situations. 2) increased confidence in quickly and appropriately responding to situations where ethics are challenged. 3) increased capacity to identify, assess, and apply principles the RID Code of Professional Conduct to complicated ethical situations. 4) increased familiarity and confidence in incorporating the NIC Interview Examination Rubric Anchors as a framework in addressing ethical dilemmas. 5) through guided text analysis and review of the proposed videotext material of ethical dilemmas (see below), an enhanced aptitude in identifying potential stakeholders, short- and longterm outcomes, available resources, cultural, sociological, and political implications. 6) increased comfort and confidence in presenting ethical solutions to peers.
